Tarpons Amend Name to Reflect Lakeland Identity
LAKELAND, FL - The arena football team, Florida Tarpons have officially changed their name to the Lakeland Tarpons effective immediately.
The Tarpons were founded in 2011 as the Florida Tarpons and were based in Estero, FL. The team played in Southwest Florida for 6 seasons before relocating to the RP Funding Center in Lakeland for the 2018 season.
After a year in Polk County, and after consulting with area leaders, the team decided to change the name to Lakeland to better its brand with the City.
"We are focused on building the Tarpons in Lakeland, and Polk County for years to come. Our new name, Lakeland Tarpons will help fans identify more with where we play, and who we are, explained Tarpons Head Coach Michael Taylor.
The Tarpons season will begin in May, playing their home games in the RP Funding Center in downtown Lakeland. Taylor went on to say, “Since our move to Lakeland, we have seen a resurgence in arena football. The fans and sponsor support has been great and we are very much looking forward to the 2019 season. Currently we are spending our time revamping our player roster and signing on new business partners and sponsors for the upcoming season”.
Season ticket renewals are under way and available through the Tarpons front office.
